As part of its unwavering commitment to preserving and protecting the aquatic environment, the Ivorian government has reaffirmed its dedication to sustainable fishery management. This emphasis on sustainable practices aligns with the National Development Plan (PND) 2021-2025, a cornerstone initiative outlining the country's development trajectory.
On Tuesday, May 7, 2024, Sidi Tiémoko Touré, the Minister of Animal and Fishery Resources (MIRAH), reiterated the government's resolve during the launch ceremony of the fish stock assessment program in Ivorian waters held at the Abidjan grain quay.
PND 2021-2025: A Roadmap for Sustainable Fishery Management
Minister Touré underscored the critical role of the National Development Plan (PND 2021-2025) in guiding the country's sustainable fishery management efforts. He explained that the plan aligns with the national sustainable fisheries management strategy, as detailed in the Livestock and Fisheries Resources Development Policy Document (PONADEPA 2022-2026). This comprehensive strategy outlines a series of measures designed to ensure the long-term health and viability of Côte d'Ivoire's fishery resources.
The Nansen Program: A Timely Intervention
The arrival of the research vessel Dr Fridtjof Nansen, operating under the auspices of the Nansen Program and flying the United Nations flag, at the Abidjan Autonomous Port (PAA) marks a significant moment for Côte d'Ivoire's sustainable fishery management endeavors. This timely stopover aligns perfectly with the Ministry of Animal and Fishery Resources' scientific program focused on assessing fishery resources within Ivorian waters and across borders.
Minister Touré emphasized the importance of scientific data in informing sound decision-making. "The successful implementation of these development plans hinges on acquiring scientific data," he explained. "This knowledge empowers us to make informed choices that ensure the sustainability of our fishery resources."
Gratitude to Key Partners
Minister Touré extended his gratitude to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), the financial partners behind the Nansen Program. "On behalf of the Ivorian government, I want to express our sincere appreciation to the FAO and the Kingdom of Norway for their multifaceted support as we strive to establish a sustainable management policy for our fishery resources," he declared.
A Ceremony Underscoring Regional Collaboration
The launch ceremony, presided over by Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé, brought together a distinguished gathering. Among the attendees were the Minister of Fisheries of Ghana, the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Republic of Benin, the resident representative of the FAO in Côte d'Ivoire, and esteemed members of the Ivorian government. Following the ceremony, the entire delegation embarked on a guided tour of the Fridtjof Nansen to gain a deeper understanding of the vessel's capabilities in research endeavors aimed at preserving and protecting the aquatic environment.
The launch of the Nansen Program signifies a crucial step forward in Côte d'Ivoire's commitment to sustainable fishery management. Through collaborative efforts guided by the National Development Plan (PND) 2021-2025, the country is poised to ensure the long-term health and prosperity of its vital fishery resources.
