France confidently opened their Women's Six Nations journey with a decisive 38-17 victory over Ireland in Le Mans. The powerful French team never seemed in serious danger of losing, though Ireland put on a respectable showing.
A crowd of 16,000 in western France braved chilly conditions to witness the French dominance on the field. Second-row players Madoussou Fall and Manae Feleu led a formidable forward presence.
"All the teams are raising their level, we saw that today," commented French coach David Ortiz. "The match reflected the closeness of world rugby. We have to work hard to stay at the top."
French Power on Display
Pauline Bourdon wasted no time setting the tone for the match, scoring a try for France within the first three minutes following a powerful maul. Though a penalty by Ireland's Nicole Fowley kept the visitors in the game, the French wouldn't be denied. An impressive 40-meter run by Marine Menager, set up by Bourdon, extended the French lead to 17-3 by halftime.
Building on their momentum after the break, Fall added another try for France. The bonus point was secured in the 63rd minute by Agathe Sochat.
Ireland's Late Rally
Ireland, with their characteristic fighting spirit, refused to go down without a battle. Tries from Aoife Wafer and Aoife Dalton, both successfully converted by Dannah O'Brien, brought some much-needed points and pride for the Irish side. However, it wasn't enough to counter the consistent French pressure. Elisa Riffonneau added insult to injury with a fifth try for France.
Lina Queyroi successfully kicked four conversions for France, with Morgane Bourgeois adding a fifth.
