During the Erasmus+ Open Day at Félix Houphouët-Boigny University, Pr Mohammadou Merawa, technical advisor to the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, highlighted the importance of Erasmus+ as a bridge between African and European cultures. Over the past years, more than 100 Ivorian students, researchers, and faculty members have benefited from Erasmus+ scholarships, with 51% coming from Félix Houphouët-Boigny University alone. Many students and faculty members are unaware of the Erasmus+ scholarship opportunities. The urban-rural education gap also affects accessibility, with students from major cities like Abidjan having greater exposure to international programs than those in rural areas.

2. Financial Barriers and Funding Constraints

Although Erasmus+ provides financial support, many students still struggle with costs related to visa processing, travel expenses, and living costs in Europe. The government and private sector must step in to offer additional scholarships and financial aid to bridge this gap.  

3. Brain Drain: The Risk of Losing Skilled Talent

One of the major concerns surrounding academic mobility is brain drain—where Ivorian students and researchers, after completing their studies in Europe, choose not to return home due to better job opportunities abroad. While international experience is beneficial, Ivory Coast must implement strategies to retain skilled talent and ensure that these individuals contribute to national development.  

4. Bureaucratic Challenges and Visa Issues

1. Expanding Awareness and Outreach Programs

To ensure more students and faculty members benefit from Erasmus+ scholarships, universities must launch awareness campaigns and organize informational workshops. Digital platforms, university newsletters, and community engagement programs can increase participation rates.  

2. Strengthening Financial Support for Mobility

To address financial constraints, the Ivorian government, private institutions, and NGOs should establish additional funding schemes to assist students with travel and living expenses. Partnering with international organizations can also help increase financial aid options.  

3. Creating Policies to Retain Skilled Talent

To combat brain drain, the Ivorian government should introduce incentives for returning students, such as:

1. Priority job placements in government and academia  
2. Research grants for returning scholars  
3. Career mentorship programs to help students transition back into the Ivorian workforce  

4. Simplifying Application and Visa Processes
